The Best Tonic for Your Gin and Tonic

The Mixer Matters More Than You Think

Here's what most people get wrong: in a gin & tonic, the tonic is most of the drink.
Pour 150 ml of tonic over 50 ml of gin, and roughly three-quarters of what you taste isn't the gin at all.

So if your G&T tastes flat or too sweet, don't blame the gin. Look at the tonic.

Sugar Is the First Thing to Check

This is where cheap tonics fall apart. A standard supermarket tonic can carry around 21 grams of sugar per serving, almost as much as a cola, and when the mixer is most of the glass, that sweetness takes over everything. Premium tonics keep it lower, letting the gin's botanicals actually come through.

The rule is simple: the less sugar, the more you taste the gin.

The Main Types, Explained

Not all tonics do the same job. Here's how to choose:

  • Classic / Indian tonic, the all-rounder. Balanced bitterness and sweetness, works with almost any gin. Fever-Tree Indian is the safest single choice if you only stock one.
  • Dry tonic, less sweet, more bitter, stronger quinine. Something like 1724 suits classic juniper-forward gins that can stand up to the bitterness.
  • Mediterranean / floral tonic, softer and more aromatic, made for contemporary floral and citrus-driven gins.
  • Light tonic, lower sugar and calories, lets a delicate gin shine.

Bubbles Count Too

A good tonic isn't just about flavor. Tight, lasting carbonation lifts the aromas up to your nose, it's why a freshly poured G&T smells so good, while a flat tonic makes the whole drink fall apart. Open the tonic fresh, pour it last, and don't let it sit.

Which Tonic for Latin Beach?

Latin Beach is a contemporary gin, citrus-forward, with tropical fruit and a note of Ecuadorian passion fruit. That points to two great matches:

  • A Mediterranean or light tonic, to keep things fresh and let the citrus lead.
  • A classic Indian tonic like Fever-Tree, if you want the safe, balanced route.

Skip the heavy, sugary tonics, they'd bury the bright character that makes Latin Beach what it is.

The Simple Formula for a Perfect G&T

Put it all together:

  • Use a 1:3 ratio, about 50 ml gin to 150 ml tonic.
  • Fill the glass with plenty of ice (more ice melts slower, not faster).
  • Add a fresh garnish, pink grapefruit or lime works beautifully with Latin Beach.
  • Pour the tonic last, stir once, and drink it cold.

Great gin deserves a great tonic. Choose well, and a simple G&T becomes something special.
